The Story Behind The Weary Warrior: A Gym T-Shirt for Anyone Fighting Inner Battles
Inspirational fitness clothing needs to tell a story, and, for me, the Weary Warrior is a tale as old as time. All of us, no matter how strong we appear to be, are vulnerable. This is often most true for ambitious people who lead by example.
That's why I created the Weary Warrior and the Female Warrior. Here's how these two meaningful gym t-shirts came to life, what they stand for and why they're the perfect fit for anyone fighting inner battles.
What is the Weary Warrior?
In the literal sense, the Weary Warrior is a t-shirt from Before I Go Apparel. It was the first meaningful gym t-shirt I designed, and it's currently our best-selling item. The truth, however, is that The Weary Warrior is more than a t-shirt.
If you're a regular reader, you'll know that Before I Go Apparel is the leading name in motivational gym wear. The Weary Warrior is the epitome of my ethos towards gym wear.
The poem is relatively simple compared to some I've written. It encapsulates the conflict between ambition, insecurity, fragility and strength. The image hammers this home by providing a window into the warrior's inner child.
Before I break down the symbolism and imagery, here's the poem that turns the Weary Warrior into a gym t-shirt with meaning:
“A weary warrior,
encased in armour.
Trapped by ambition.
Screaming for protection.
Building a legacy,
before I go.The Weary Warrior
The meaning behind this poem is hiding in plain sight. It's a tribute to people who lead from the front and maintain a show of strength, while battling uncertainty, insecurity and fear.
The Weary Warrior Poem: A Line-by-Line Breakdown
The Weary Warrior is short by design. Every line carries its own weight, and each one says something specific about the fight going on beneath the armour. Here's what each stanza means to me.
A weary warrior,
encased in armour.
The armour is what people see on the outside. For gymgoers, and people who lift weights in particular, there's often a desire (conscious or unconscious) to look as big and imposing as possible.
In my experience, that desire is fuelled by insecurity and uncertainty. Being bigger makes us look confident. It makes us look less vulnerable, even if the inner self doesn't feel that way.
Trapped by ambition.
Ambition is both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because it drives us forward. It gives us a meaning and purpose in life. However, it's simultaneously a curse because the drive for success is painful. It's tiring, and it can drain us. That's why the most ambitious people can also be the weariest.
Screaming for protection.
Screaming for protection is meant to be figurative, rather than literal, because warriors rarely show their emotions. It's an internal scream.
The inner child is crying out for someone to keep them safe. In many ways, you're the person who needs to protect the inner child. However, you also need to be protected, which is why it's important to communicate.
Don't feel like you're walking through life alone. Lean on those closest to you. Armies thrive when they work together, from the leader to the lowest rank. Just because you're a warrior leading from the front, it doesn't mean you have to fight alone.
Building a legacy,
before I go.
I don't know what your ambitions are, but I know you have them, because all of us want to leave a legacy. The important word here is “building”. Success doesn't happen overnight. I know that from my personal life, but also in business.
My desire to create inspirational gym clothing is an ongoing effort. Rome, as they say, wasn't built in a day. The final line of my poem is a reminder that things take time. However, brick by brick, you can build something to be proud of if you stay the course and remember the Weary Warrior's code.
What The Weary Warrior Means: The Psychology of Inner Battles
The inner child you can see within the warrior's stomach (pictured below) is inspired by a discussion I had with my counsellor six years ago. As she told me at the time, we all have an inner child. The child is naïve and vulnerable, but they're part of us. They need to feel loved and protected.
My poem acknowledges that. It tells you that it's OK to feel helpless at times. It's OK to be afraid. It's OK not to have an answer in a crisis. The poem also tells you that these aren't reasons to give up. In fact, it's quite the opposite. You have to embrace the unknown and the uncomfortable when you're striving to achieve something.
That alone is scary. When you add existing struggles to the mix, whatever they may be, it can leave you screaming for protection. That's why the desire for success feels like a trap. That's why warriors encased in armour may not be as impervious to doubt and fear as it seems.
Why I Put The Weary Warrior on a Gym T-Shirt
I know this because I've felt it, I feel it, and I'll continue to feel it. It's also a feeling my coach, Rhett, has felt. The line, “screaming for protection”, was directly inspired by something he told me during a squat session.
He has long dreamed that someone will put their arm around him when it's all over and say: it's OK, you can rest now. I think a lot of us understand that feeling, which is why weary warriors are crying out for someone to support them.
My t-shirt is a form of support. It's there to show people you're strong, capable and determined, but that you also have flaws and weaknesses. That, at times, you also need a guiding light and people to provide support.
Some people will get it. Some people won't. That's OK. Some people aren't weary warriors. However, the warriors among you will understand what I'm talking about. You'll feel the words I've written and, hopefully, find a way to apply them to your own story. You'll see a bit of yourself in the image.
That's why I released a female warrior, because men aren't the only ones who lead by example, but carry a weight of vulnerability (see image above). Women are just as strong, just as ambitious and just as fragile. Anyone can find themselves in the midst of inner battles throughout their life. That's why mental health gym wear is my passion.
Wearing The Weary Warrior: A Gym T-Shirt with Meaning
I create t-shirts with meaning, so I tell stories that people like us understand. There are plenty of great gym wear brands out there, but none of them tells stories like Before I Go Apparel. Only my meaningful gym t-shirts contain original poems written from personal experiences.
Only my meaningful gym t-shirts feature images from established artists, such as Dullal Miah and the man behind the warrior image, Yosafat Catur. The Weary Warrior is more than a gym t-shirt. It's art. It's a message to the world. It's a story you can be part of, just like The Sculptor, In Shadows We Glow, and every other piece in the collection.
If you're a Weary Warrior, there is a gym t-shirt for you. It doesn't matter if you lift weights, run miles and miles, or stretch out on the yoga mat. The Weary Warrior is for anyone who cares about their physical and mental health.
